According to the passage, there are some critics of the ethanol fuel and argues that it is not a good replacement for gasoline. However, the lecturer disagrees with the claims and refutes every reason from the reading material.
First, the lecturer agrees by burning ethanol fuel it will release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. However, he suggests the use of ethanol fuel won’t cause global warming. In his opinion, these fuels are produced by plants, which will absorb carbon dioxide from the environment during the growing process. In other words, if we use more ethanol fuel, we need to grow more plants. As a result, this process will help to ease global warming.
Second, the production of ethanol doesn’t cause the reduction of the available food amount for the animals. The part of the plant used to make these fuel is usually not being eaten by the animals. Therefore, the amount for plants for the other usages will not decrease as the reading passage mentions.
Last, the lecturer argues that, with the development of technology, the ethanol fuel will be able to compete with gasoline on price eventually. Although it’s true that the support from government helps to keep the ethanol’s price In low level, the lecturer believes there is great potential for the ethanol fuel to be more effective than nowadays. On the other hand, more people use ethanol fuel; more profits will generate, which means more company will get involved in the development. Thus, the price of ethanol fuel will be lower in the future. So the lecturer concludes that critics from the passage are wrong.
