The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is about whether ethanol is a proper replacement for gasoline or not. Considering this, the author claims that ethanol cannot be an appropriate alternative for gasoline. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the way that the reading just argued. The professor demonstrates three reasons to reject the points in the passage.
The first criticism of the passage against which the lecture argues is that ethanol do not do anything has to do with the problem of greenhouse gas, due to the fact that it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere when it burns for fuel. As stated by the professor, the ethanol will not increase global warming. It is true that it releases carbon dioxide when it burns, but this issue compensates with the process of growing plants, such as corn, which are used in order to produce ethanol. Because, these plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere so as to grow.
Moreover, unlike the passage which claims that using ethanol reduces the major source of food for animals. The professor illustrates that in order to produce ethanol, the plant's cell walls, which name eludes me at the moment, are used, which is not eaten by animals. So, employing ethanol as an alternative for gasoline will not reduce animals' food sources.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the passage that the price of ethanol cannot compete with that of gasoline, saying that one the use of ethanol increases, the produce of it will be increase, which leads to decrease the price of ethanol. It is presumed that after using ethanol as an alternative for gasoline, the cost of producing one unit of ethanol will be diminished by 45%.
All in all, the professor maintains that none of the options in the reading is not convincing, and ethanol is an appropriate alternative for gasoline.
