TPO 22 - Ethanol fuel, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, has been advocated by some people as an alternative to gasoline in the United States. However, many critics argue that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline for several reasons.

The lecture and the reading are both about the possibility of using ethanol as an alternative for gasoline in the United States. The author of the reading provides three reasons to negate this approach. However, the lecturer argues those ideas as he believes they are not convincing.

Firstly, it is suggested in the passage that ethanol does not offer any environmental merits over gasoline. The article notes that ethanol also causes global warming like gasoline as it releases carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the air when being burnt. This argument, nonetheless, is challenged by the lecturer. His position is that ethanol does not cause global warming because its emission of carbon dioxide is offset by the growth of its mother plants thanks to the fact that plants absorb this greenhouse gas when they grow.

Secondly, the writer contends that the vast production of ethanol will cause a shortage of food for animals like cows and chickens because ethanol is produced from corn which is used to feed farm animals. The lecturer, in contrast, disproved this by saying that ethanol can be produced from cellulose which can be extracted from plants not eaten by farm animals. Therefore, the amount of corn demanded by farm animals will not be affected.

Thirdly, the reading mentions that ethanol cannot compete with gasoline although both have the same price. It is due to the fact that the government has offered substantial tax subsidies for ethanol. Without this kind of tax, ethanol will be more expensive than gasoline. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this statement. He puts forth the idea that the price of ethanol will reduce when there are enough consumers. He also asserts that if the production of ethanol triples, its cost will be reduced by 40% which means that ethanol is able to compete with gasoline without any tax support.
