Both the author of the reading and the lecturer discuss if ethanol fuel produced from plants such as corn or sugar cane can be an alternative to gasoline. The author states that some critics have negative thoughts of ethanol fuel and give three reasons of support whereas the professor finds those reasons unconvincing.
First off, the reading claims that the excessive use of ethanol would not be helpful for global warming since it releases carbon dioxide while burning. The lecturer, on the other hand, points out that since the plants used in the production of ethanol fuel absorb carbon dioxide for getting nutrients, ethanol fuel does not cause environmental problems like gasoline.
According to the passage, a considerable amount of ethanol production would consume many plant sources utilized for other purposes like feeding farm animals. The speaker, on the contrary, refutes this by explaining that ethanol is produced from parts of the plants that are not eaten by animals so, food source available for farm animals will not be reduced.
Lastly, the reading believes that in case the government will stop helping ethanol producers in tax subsidies, its price will skyrocket. The professor disagrees with this claim. He explains that as more consumers buy ethanol, its production will also increase resulting in a decrease in its price. Thus, it can compete with gasoline on price even if the government cut off subsidies.
