Some people in the United States advocate that ethanol fuel can be a good alternative to gasoline fuel. Ethanol is made from some plants such as sugar cane and corn. The passage suggests some disadvantages of this fuel.
First, ethanol burning produces carbon dioxide which makes the earth warmer so it can not be a good replacement for gasoline. Although the professor says that as ethanol production increases, planting increases too and these plants can absorb carbon dioxide which comes from ethanol burning.
Second, plants are the most important food resource for animals such as cows and chickens. By using a large number of plants for ethanol production, a substantial resource of food for animals will diminish. On the other hand, the professor says that ethanol is made of cellulose and it can be extracted from some parts of plants which are not used by animals.
Third, in fact, ethanol price is much more than gasoline price and the government pay tax subsidies to make ethanol price similar to gasoline price. So ethanol can have the huge cost for the government and if the government does not pay subsidies, its price will grow hugely. Although the professor mentions that as the ethanol production increases, the facilities for ethanol will increase too. If ethanol production is three times more than present production, its price will decrease by 40 percent.
