TPO 23 Distinction of the yellow cedar tree

Essay topics:

TPO 23 Distinction of the yellow cedar tree.

The reading and the lecture both regarding the steady decline of the yellow cedar tree, a species of tree that grows in North America. The reading passage states three hypotheses about the waning of the tree. Nevertheless, the lecture casts doubt on it by mentioning several reasons.
Firstly, the writer reveals that this declining is caused by insect parasites, specifically the cedar bark beetle, which attacks the threes, and the beetle larvae eat the wood. But, the lecturer mentions that when cedar trees are young they are so healthy and full of poisonous substances inside it for removing parasites. Young cedars are much more resistant than other species. So, the healthiest trees are unlikely to suffer from beetles.
Secondly, the author expresses the aggressive feeding habits of brown bears, which claw at the cedars in order to eat the sweet tree bark. Moreover, these habits might be the factor of declining trees. However, the professor regards this statement as erroneous. Because, there are a lot of islands in North America, where cedar trees grow, and any brown bears seemed on those islands.
Thirdly, the reading passage states the gradual changes in climate, which might be caused by this process. Furthermore, during the last one hundred years, the climate changed drastically in northwestern North America. Thus, that temperature change affected the yellow cedar trees’ root system, which now starts growing in the late winter, instead of growing in the early spring. Apparently, plants’ root systems are so sensitive, and as the weather gets colder roots to get damaged due to the freezing. (261 words)
