The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is reasons which caused declining of populations of yellow cedar. Considering this, the author states that several hypotheses describe this decline. The professor, on the other hand, clearly challenges whatever contended in the reading by citing three rational reasons which show reasons in reading are inadequate.
First, both the author and the professor talk about special insect, bark beetle, can destroyed yellow cedar. As claimed by the passage, this creature may decline yellow cedar thorough its larvae eat the wood. The lecturer, nevertheless, contradicts the author's view and explain healthy cedar trees are much resistant than other trees. This trees because of using of powerful chemical elements for eliminates insects were weak. As a result, weaken yellow cedars are not anymore resistant to seek.
Second of all, both the author and the professor discuss the effect of decreasing bears on the population of cedars. The passage goes on to mention that decline bears that eat the tree bark beetles may induce to dying cedars. In contrast, the lecturer explains that populations of the yellow cedar in some regions which have no bears had decreased.
The last point discussed in passage has to do with gradual changes of climate may be to influenced. cold weather causes root
was damaged. The professor rejects this by explaining the subject which although lower elevation is warm and higher elevation is cold, trees exist in lower elevation more died than higher elevation. These evidences suggest cedar's root are sensitive and cause kill them.
