TPO 27 integrated writing : Little Ice Age
In the reading, the author claims that the cause of the abnormal little ice age is known through three viable reasons mentioned which was occurred from 1350 until 1900 C.E. However, finding all the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally casts doubt on what is claimed in the text and present some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the cold current which had entered into the gulf steam due to unexpected warm weather was the main responsible for occurring this phenomenon. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the cold current would have effected only Europe and North American, whereas the ice age observed on southern hemisphere such as News land and South Africa as well. Thus, there is not any rational explanation for the ice age which is associated to these regions.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the sunlight which had been obstructed owing to the clouds of dust, coming from vast volcanic eruption, can be legitimate justification for such a cool climate in that era. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that scientifically, dust could bring such ramification. The issue is if volcanic eruption had been the cause, it would have been accompanies by some visual effects such as colorful sunset and gray or brown snow instead of white. While no record showed such harbingers. Therefore, the volcanic activities were not strong enough to generate this cool environment.
Finally, the author asserts that decreasing the population and its subsequent environmental impact is to blame for cool climate. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that in spite of the fact that the decrease in the numbers of people is true it by no means did not last long enough to be in impactful as the population soon rebounded. Consequently, they needed to cut the trees in order to clear the fields and prepare sufficient food for the growing population. Obviously, the forests could not render weather cold that much.
