The reading and lecture both discuss the causes behind forming the ice age period. While the reading provides three reasons that caused the ice age period, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading states that the galercials melted due to the warmer weather and caused disruption in the gulf stream. However, the professor refutes saying that the disruption i n golf strean caused cooling temperature at Europe and north America, But this disruption did not explain any cooling effect in this area.
Secondly, the reading avers that volcanic disruption released sulfer oxide to the air. Furthermore, this gas blocked the sun light. So, that caused dropped in the global temperature. On the other hand, the professor rejects this notion by saying that volcano disruption can cause cooling effect and cause visual effect. For instance, volaco can cause colorful sun light like and people can see the snow like blue instead of white. However, there was not any report to confirm that. As a result, the volcano disruption was not strong enough to cause huge amount of dust which might cause cooling effect.
Lastly, the reading mentions that the decrease in human populations caused increase in the carbon dioxide level in the air . This is because people did not cut the trees area to use it for agriculture. So, the green house effect has been decreased. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by pointing out that the drop of the green house effect can cause drop on temperature, but the human population went back to the normal size. Furthermore, people started to cut the trees down again to use these areas for food supply. Consequently, the green house effect could not be the cause behind forming the ice age period.
