TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice

The reading and lecture both discuss the salvage logging for the forest. While the reading states three advantages for salvage logging, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.

Firstly, the reading states that the decomposition of dead trees takes many years. So, it is much better to go for salvage logging to give a good chance for new tree to grow for speed recovery for the forest areas. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that rapid cleaning for the forest is not the right solution for the tree's growth. This is because the deed trees can provide the soil by important nutrients. As a result, the rapid removal of the deed trees will remove the useful nutrients from the soil.

In addition, the article avers that the deed trees are a good environment for insects to spreed like bark bettle. Besides, they have a negative effect on the healthy trees. On the other hand, the speaker questions this notion by pointing out that there were many bettle at that area for hundreds years and they could not cause any damage. Furthermore, she states that these bettles were important for birds that are important to contribute for healthy forest.

Finally, the reading mentions that the salvage logging provides the industrial with wood and increases the job opportunities for many people. So, it has good economic effects. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by explaining that we need helicopter for salvage logging and that is very expensive process. In addition, the salvage logging provides the city with temporary jobs. This is because salvage logging needs works with a good experience and highly trained more than the local citizens. Consequently, the logging salvage does not have economic benefits.
