The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the little ice age and provides three mains reasons for support. However, the lecture casts doubts on the claims made by the article. He thinks the causes explained by the reading passage are out of date and opposes to each of the reasons of the article.
First, the reading passage sustains that a possible cause for the dramatic temperature drop during the little ice age was the ocean current disruption by the freshwater of the melted glaciers. This point is rebutted by the lecture who explains that in that scenario only North America would be affected and not all the globe. Oceania and South Africa also experienced the dramatic cold weather as well.
Secondly, the reading passage suggests that volcanic eruption could be another cause of the little ice age. In contrast to this claim, the lecture sustains that the population at that time would have noticed and also reported different phenomenons related to a strong volcanic eruption, like the sky changing color and the dim light during the day due to the dust. Thus, there is not strong evidence of a great volcanic eruption enough to provoke a little ice age.
Finally, the lecture questions the idea given by the article that the cold temperature was due a weakened greenhouse effect because of the declining of agriculture. Challenging this idea, the lecture argues that the amount of time this declining took place was too short to create an effect so extreme as the little ice age.
