TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya wi

The reading passage discusses an interesting topic about the decline of the tree, Torreya taxifoha, in Florida, and provides three possible solution to avoid the extinction of the tree. However, the lecture casts doubts on these solutions and refutes all of the options elaborates by the article.

First, the idea to reestablish the tree in the same location where this plant is original is refuted by the lecture, who explains this same location already suffered the consequences of the global warming and now is completely changed. As a result of this, the area became drier and warmer which are condition no good for the Torreya.

Secondly, the lecture also challenges the idea of the reading passage that proposes the alternative of an assisted migration by relocating the tree to an area much further to the north. Thus, a colder weather, friendly for the plant, could be better for its grow. This argument is challenged by the lecture explaining that an assisted migration could cause more harm than good, and to illustrated this idea recall the situation with a local plant and how much damage an alien species could be for the rest of the environment.

Finally, the reading passage offers the option to preserve the tree in a research center. Again, the lecture disagrees with the article by arguing that the Torreya's seed needs diversity and big areas to develop successfully, and those are condition that a small center does not have and will provoke the fail of the preservation of the Torreya in a long term.
