The reading passage is discussing an interesting topic about the memoir of the Chevalier de Seingalt, and how accurate this memoir is compared with historical facts. According to the reading passage, the Chevalier exaggerated and invented many events to make his life more attractive. However, the lecture casts doubts about this theory and, on the contrary, affirms that the memoir could be accurate with the history refusing the arguments exposed in the reading passage.
First, the reading passage states that Chevalier was not as rich as he claimed to be, considering some history evidence that shows that the Chevalier borrowed a considerable amount of money from a Swiss merchant. In opposition, the lecture explains that the money borrowed had the purpose to get immediate cash while the Chevalier could sell some goods or property, and return the money back. In consequence, the borrow-factor was not a proof of lack of wealthy.
Secondly, the reading passage rises doubts about the accuracy of the conversation between the Chevalier and Voltaire described in the memoirs. To support this point, the reading passage points out that the conversation occurred a long time before the memoir was written, and it would be impossible for the Chevalier to remember every detail of that conversation. On the contrary, the lecture remarks that the Chevalier was constantly making notes and consulting with the different characters of his memoirs that he later wrote about. Thus, the detailed conversation could be already saved in previous notes that later were used for the memoirs.
Finally, the reading passage refutes the idea the Chevalier could ever escape from the Venetian jail by making a hole in the roof. According to the reading passage, the Chevailer had important contacts and influence who could have helped him to get his freedom. On the other hand, the lecture supports the idea of the roof's escape by bringing up the evidence that just after the Chevalier's escape, the jail was under a complete roof repair.
In conclusion, the lecture and the reading are both about the memoir of the chevalier de Seingalt, but while the reading passage challenge the accuracy of the events described in it, the lecture effectively supports it as historical accurate.
