Both the reading and the lecture is about the reasons for little ice age. The passage presents three reasons while the lecturer refutes them all, casting doubt on every single point.
First, the author claims that melted glaciers had caused a tremendous amount of cold water releasing into the gulf stream. Thus, these cold fresh water decrease the environmental temperature. In opposition, the lecture proves that it is wrong because disrupting ocean just occurred in some specific places like Europe but little ice age was not merely in that places.
Second, the reading mentions the effects of volcanoes. The dust of volcanoes eruption made a cloud preventing sunlight from getting to earth. Conversely, the professor makes it clear that from the available evidence the volcanoes eruption was not strong enough to decrease the environmental temperature causing little ice age. Because little ice age formation needed a large amount of eruption that dramatically created dust into the atmosphere whereas there is no report proving this claim.
Third, the reading asserts that declining of the greenhouse effect due to increasing of trees is another reason. As human populations diminished, there was obviously fewer need for agriculture thus the debris land became forests. Growing trees at forest utilize carbon dioxide, therefore, mitigating the greenhouse effect. The lecturer completely dismisses this view, stating that this effect needed a long time while there was not enough time to cool the environment to turn it to the ice age. This indicates that greenhouse effect was not the cause.
