In this set of material, the author and the lecturer disagree on the merit of the truth behind whether E. Peary who was an adventurer and explorer did reach the North Pole in 1909. The reading passage states that there is no doubt that Peary did arrive at the North Pole. Furthermore, the writer in the passage suggests that the investigation of the National Geography Society support that trip. Also, the recent sailing of Tom Avery in the same direction proves it took that fast of thirty-seven days to reach the Arctic, and a presence of photographs with shadows in which we can measure the sun height in that area is strong evidence for that trip. In contrary, the professor in the lecture challenges those arguments of the passage and states three reasons proving that they are skeptical. Following is a brief interpretation of his perspective.
First of all, the writer in the passage asserts that the investigation of the National Geographical Society was one of substantial evidence to convict that the trip of E. Peary was right. However, the speaker in the listening passage refutes this evidence. He believes that this society had several of E. Peary's best friends, also the National Geographical Society had funded this trip, and since the investigation took two days only to declare the reality of that expedition, therefore, it is not a crucial evidence to proof this trip was biased.
Secondly, the article claims that even though the voyage of E. Peary was so fast and took thirty-seven days to reach the North Pole, but the other recent trip of Tom Avery who mimics the ship, the sailing way to arrive at the Arctic which arrived within less than Peary's time, proves that it is possible to sail among that harsh conditions successfully. Nevertheless, the listening passage's professor refutes this experiment conducting that it is impossible to travel that fast with old equipment. Also, Avery's ship was not as heavy as Peary's ship. In fact, Tom did not take his food with him, and all his food dropped by a plane. Therefore, the conditions of voyaging were variable.
Last but not the least, the reading passage states that the presence of photographs that taken in the North Pole could be one of the best evidence to prove that trip. Because we can calculate the shadow in those photos, and estimate the position of the sun in the Antriactica which is different from any other position on the Earth. Whereas, the professor in the lecture rebuffs this evidence, too. He says that those pictures were ancient and they took with old cameras; he believes that those photos are faded and fuzzy or unclear to measure and estimate the shadows or the position of the sun in that region. In fact, we can not be sure where they took those pictures.
