In this set of material, the article and the lecture disagree about which hypothesis explains the reason behind sea otter decline population. The reading passage suggests that the pollution theory is more acceptable one and supports it with three reasons. While, the professor believes that the predation theory has a stronger explanation for that decline. Following how the professor debates each reason of the passage.

First, the reading passage states that pollutions which result from oil companies and industrial chemical sources which found in water samples at that area are life-threatening for those sea mall mammals which increase their infection and cause indirect death. However, the listener claims that idea and believes that since there is no one dead sea animal found offshore is an obvious reason that the predators attack seems the probable suggestion of the predation theory.

Second, the writer states that there decline in other sea animals like sea lions and seals along the coast of Alaskan lines which indicates the pollution is behind the reduction in animals population . Whereas, the professor rebuffs this idea proves that human hunting of those animals such as whale leads to that disturbance in the animal population in general. Furthermore, the professor adds that the reduction of sea lions and seals also occurs because human started to hunt those animals.

Third, the author states that the unequal otter population distribution at Alaskan shores is an active support to the presence of pollution at that water. However, the speaker refutes this suggestion, and he states that because the predators can enter easily open water location of that otter so they would be of course decline dramatically, whereas, the area of shallow waters which are not easily to reach by predators would noticeably increase in that animal's population.
