In this set materials, the reading passage state that the claim of Robert about explorer the North Pole is correct and brings some reasons for this claim. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading by providing different reasons (and examples).
First of all, the reading passage indicates that the National Geographic Society provided a committee group for researching the claim of Robert. This committee recorded some equipment that shown the Robert claims was true; in contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that this committee was not completely objective, because the number of people, who worked in this committee, were the close friends of the Robert. Also, they only investigated for 2 days. Therefore, the research of the national Geography is not correct.
Secondly, the reading argues that Robert as the same as Ellesmere could reach the North in 37 days; conversely, what the lecturer state is different. She believes that the situation of the Ellesmere was different from Robert. Ellesmere did not bring food with him; hence, the speed of Ellesmere was more than the Roberts' speed. Also, the foods were received to the Ellesmere by the airplane every day; hence, he has much less weight than Robert. Furthermore, the weather condition was completely different in this 2 situation. The weather when Robert went to the North was unfavourable. Therefore this claim is rejected.
Finally, although the passage says that measured shadow angles in the Peary’s pictures from his journey confirm that he reached the North Pole, the speaker disagrees by mentioning that Peary took those photos one hundred years ago, and the shadows in the pictures have become blurred. So, even the most accurate technics for measuring the shadow angles in the pictures could not prove his claim.
