The issue both reading and the listening focus on is Peary’s claim of reaching the North Pole, but the listening casts doubt at three main points.
At the first point, the reading states that an investigation was organized by the National Geographic Society. The investigation concluded that Peary’s accounts were consistent and persuasive. According to the listening, the society was comprised of Peary’s close friends who had contributed to Peary’s expedition. Furthermore, the investigation only lasted two days, so it is not fully objective.
At the second point, the reading mentions that recent expedition by Tom Avery supported Peary’s claim of reaching the North Pole in 37 days. Avery finished his expedition in less than 37 days, using the same doglsed kind and dog breed. However, the listening claims that the circumstances for Avery’s expedition were different from Peary’s. He had to carry less weight, since food was dropped from the sky. Also, the weather condition for Avery was better. Thus, Avery’s expedition was too different to support Peary’s claim.
At the third point, the reading believed that photographs taken by Peary contribute to his claim. Measurement of shadow for these photographs helps to calculate the Sun’s position, which corresponds to where it should have been. On the contrary, the listening confirms that Peary’s photographs were too fuzzy and unfocused. Because establishing the Sun’s position needs precision, the position of the Sun cannot be calculated.
