The article states that Robert E. Peary reached the North pole on April 7, 1909 and provides three reasons of support. Conversely, the professor states that there is no solid evidence to prove Peary's claim and she refutes each of the author's reasons
First, the reading avers that the NAtional Geographic Society investigation revealed that Peary's records were consistent and persausive to support Peary's claim that he reached the North pole. However, the professor disagrees with this point by saying that even though the National Geographic committee did an investigation, it was not completely objective. For the reason that many memebers of this society were actually Peary's friends and some of them funded his trip. Also, the professor says that the invesigation lasting only 2 days and according to Peary's statement it did not examined all his evidences. Consequently, the professor concludes that the National geographic Society investigation is not trustworthy and did not prove that Peary was indeed reached the North Pole.
The reading claims that a recent expedition was done by an explorer named Tom Avery provides support for Peary’s claim that he reached the North pole In only 37 days. The professor, on the other hand, opposes this point by explaining the difference between Avery’s trip and once that done by Peray. First, She says that the sildes that had been used in both trips were the same, but the slides of Avery’s trip were less weight. For the reasons that Avery did not carry his food with him, it was actually dropped to him by airplane. And secondly, there was a favorable weather condition in Avery’ trip than it was in the Peary’s trip. As a resuly, the professor concludes that since these signifianct differences among those trips, it is so difficult to proof the claim of peary’s that he reached the North Pole.
Third, the reading posits that there are photgraphes have taken by Peary that support his claim. The professor refutes this point by saying that these photos did not prove anything. Since these photographs have been taken a hundred years ago, the camera used was fuzzy, and unfoucsed lens. In addition to, these photos became faded, fuzzy, and so hard to calculate shadows of sun. And therefore, the professor concludes that if we could not verify the accurate measurement of shadows of the sun in these photos, we could not compare to the position of the sun in the North Pole. And finally, these photographs are not a confident source to relay on it to suuport Peary’s claim.
