Writing and lecture are both about an arctic explorer, Robert Peary, who allegedly reached the North Pole in 1909. On the one side, the writer provides proofs favorable to this expedition's authenticity. On the other side, the speaker casts doubts on the claims made by the writer, underlining that the proofs are not solid when compared to real facts.
First, the committee was subjective when analyzed the records and the equipment because most of its memebers were Peary's close fellows. Moreover, they had personal reasons to support Peary, due to the fact that they sponsored him with a lot of money, and therefore their final decision was biased. In addition to this, the investigation lasted only two days, which was a very short time to decide on such a large issue. So, this is a strong counter – argument against author's point of view.
Second, Avery did not perform this expedition by strictly following the beforehand conditions. The writer asserts that Avery redid the same distance in less than 37 days, and thus he managed to reach North Pole even faster than Peary. However, the speaker refutes this, stating that this situation is not plausible at all, since Avery benefited from better meteorological conditions. Additionally, he had less weight because he did not carry the food, which was actually dropped for him by helicopters. Thus, the passage's theory does not stand up.
Third, the technology that measures the shadows in order to determine the Surf s position in the sun is exact. The writer presents some photographs with shadows for being convincing on this matter. Anyway, the speaker mentions that those photos are made with old cameras which were not developed enough to perfectly fuse and focus, and furthermore they were quite worn out, blurred and faded, so it could not provide realistic results. To summarize, the author and the speaker seem to be in total disagreement regarding this topic.
