The reading provides three pieces of evidence for approving that Robert E. Peary reached the North pole. However, the professor in the listening casts doubt on all the author's theories and raises several counter-arguments that as listed below.
First, the passage states that there is a committee, which is called the National Geographic Society, had examined Peary's expedition and concluded that he reach the pole. Conversely, the professor refutes the committee investigation and says that they were not objective. The period of investigation was not enough, which were two days only, and Peary's trip was funded by part of the committee. Thus, this is a skeptical evidence and cannot be accounted.
Secondly, the reading mentions that there is a recent expedition (Avery) reached the North Pole in less time-period comparing to Peary's expedition, which is a compelling evidence that Peary reached the North Pole. Yet, the lecturer argues that Avery's trip was different from Peary's one. First, the weather condition was not similar. Secondly, food supply method was different as well. Avery’s food supply by airplane; thus, he weighted less by reducing the amount of food; therefore, in sliding way, Avery could move faster. So, it is not reasonable to compare Avery's trip with Peary's expedition.
Finally, the passage states that there were photographs taken by Peary in the pole. The positions were the photos taken and measuring the shadow provides a strong evidence that Peary reached the North Pole. However, the professor refutes this point by explaining that it proves nothing. This is because the quality of these photos was poor and taken by very old camera, which the photos appeared uncleared; thus, there was not a precise measuring of shadows to be supported as an evidence.
