Both the lecture and the reading are about the authenticity of Peary's' journey to the North Pole. While the passage asserts that he truly reached the North Pole by presenting some reasons, the lecture completely refutes these claims with evidence.
First, the passage states that a committee investigated peary's records and equipment. The committee confirmed that he reached there, however, the professor dismisses this claim. The committee was composed of Peary 's friend and they were biased, therefore, their conformity is not trustworthy.
Second, the reading argues that he can reach the North Pole in only 37 days as another person named Tom Avery did this journey in less than 37 days. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that the conditions of these two journeys were different for instance Avery did not carry foods and airplane carried foods for him. Also, the weather conditions were different. Thus, Avery experience is not convincing that Peary reached there.
Third, the author explains that Peary 's photographs are another proof. They measure the shadow in these photographs and make it clear that the sun's position from photographs correspond to what it should have been at the North Pole. In the opposition, the professor explains that the photographs were taken by a primitive camera thus the photographs are not well enough for this method. In addition, the shadow on the photographs was faded and could not be used for this technic.
