As it was stated in the reading passage, it is the author's belief that Edmontosaurus, which was a common North Slope dinosaur, migrated during the harsh inhospitable winters of the area. S/he provided three reasons to substantiate their claim. On the contrary, the lecturer finds the justification of the author unconvincing and utterly repudiates the hypotheses by producing some counter arguments.
Initially, the author brought up the idea that Edmontosauruses fed on plants and their diet supports the idea of migration. However, the lecturer is thoroughly doubtful about the reliability of this idea. As she points out that in the North Slope sun is shining 24 hours a day during summer. Thus this heat made it possible for a lot of plants to grow during summer. So there was a lot of dead plants that could be used as the dinosaurs food by the time winter came.
Another emphasized point in the reading was that Edmontosaurs lived in herd and this finding further supports the idea of migration. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this one too by asserting that living in herd doesn't necessarily means that the species are migrants. It could simply be due to extra protection. She illustrates the Rosevelt elk as an example of a species living in herd but live in one place the whole year.
As the last point, the author drew attention to the fact that edmontosaurs were physically capable of traveling long distances to reach a hospitable region. Yet again, the lecturer deems the idea invalid as well by stating that the mature animals could travel long distances. But the juveniles were not physically capable to do so. The mature ones couldn't leave them behind. Because the young wouldn't survive on their own. Moreover the juveniles would slow down the herd as the adults wanted to watch over them.
