TPO 30. THE BURNING MIRROR
The reading passage and lecture have conflicting opinions about whether the greek tale of the burning mirror is true. The author strongly postulates that the Greeks had never made such a device because of three compelling reasons. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that none of the author's assumptions is accurate.
First and foremost, according to the speaker in the lecture, in the experiment, there was thousands of sheet of copper used to arrange and form this device, not a single one. Furthermore, she said that at that time of greek, there were great mathematicians who easily placed this mirror in the right location. Nonetheless, the article offsets these points by declaring that the Greeks had not had such advanced technology to create it and it required a lot of commitments such as very precise location and a large sheet of copper which did not exist at that time.
On top of this, the professor further asserts that according to the experiment, the Greeks used this mirror to send sticky substances which burned within seconds. Therefore, the author's point that it took ten minutes to cause a fire in the wooden object was rejected by this evidence. it goes without saying that this tool was indeed useful and practical one. These claims refute the writer's implications about burning mirror took a long time to burn in Roman's ships because it was proved that it would take 30 minutes to set fire on rival's boats.
Lastly, the lecturer suggests that romans were too familiar with flaming arrows method, thus it was essential to attack them secretly. Since they could easily recognise arrows, Greeks decided to use a burning mirror which was the best weapon to suddenly panic their opponents. Nevertheless, the author counters these indications by insisting that there was no need to improve their current weapons. This is mainly due to the fact that the flaming arrows were a method as good as burning mirror to attack their enemy.
