The reading and the lecture are both about "burning mirror" which was used by Greeks to protect from Roman Navy attack. The author suspects that such type of things did not use that time and provides three supporting reasons. However, the professor believes that the Greeks was able to make such mirror and used it. Moreover, he refutes all of the hypotheses provides in the reading.
First of all, the author contends that the Greeks had not the adequate technology to make such mirror. He establishes his point by in indicating that a large and wide mirror was required to make fire on the Roman navy ship, and Greeks did not the technology to make such copper sheet. However, the professor disproves this point. He says that greeks made their mirror by combining a large number of small mirrors which they frequently did before. Moreover, The curvature which needed for that mirror could easily form since many Greek mathematicians already know the principle of forming a parabola.
Secondly, the writer avers that since a research reviles that to start a fire by using the mirror from 30m away needs at least 10 minutes, they might not get such long static position of the navy ship to burn. This point is challenged by the professor. He states that the research might not consider the actual material by which the ship was formed rather they think that wood is the material. He also mentions that to protect the ship, the roman used a fitch which was easy to burnable. So, the Greeks did not need much time to start a fire on the ship using that mirror.
Finally, the reading points out that Greeks had the more advanced weapon to make fire, so they did not use this mirror. The speaker, on the other hand, rebuts this point by saying that the roman had already known that Flaming arrows, so they could change their position. However, as the burning mirror was not familiar to them, so this worked quickly and effectively.
