TPO 31 A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some paleontologists interpret the lines as evidence that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. However, critics have opposed the idea that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur, citing several reasons.
The reading and lecture are both about whether or not the Sinosauropteryx dinosaur has feathers. The author of the reading believes that the dinosaur don't have feather in their body providing three reasons of support. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented.
First of all, the author points out that anatomy of the dinosaur did not represent having fine lines during its existence and the structure were formed after its death. The article notes that their remains are buried in volcanic ashes and their skin are preserved into fibers and mistakenly interpreted as feathers. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the burial site of the dinosaur are the same with other species and that there fossil fuels are well preserved. Furthermore, she argues that scientist did not see decomposition in the site, so the structures of the Sinosauropteryx remains intact and the functional structures did not decompose. Also, no fibers are seen on the remains of the dinosaurs.
Secondly, the author contends that scientist cannot distinguish which structure of the dinosaur body does the fine lines belongs. The article establishes that the fine lines in their body are from frills. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that the chemical composition of frills and feathers are different from each other. Moreover, she elaborates on this by mentioning that feather has beta carotene in its structure while frills don't have beta carotene on its system.
Finally, the author states that the position of the fine lines in the fossils are from its backbone and its tail. The article denotes that flying and thermoregulation is not possible because of its structures. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the in other birds the function of feathers are different. She puts forth the idea that Peacocks feathers are for attracting mates and for display function. In addition, the Sinosauroptryx feather has orange and white color on its wings and its support the purpose of display function.
