TPO-10 - Integrated Writing Task The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it c
The reading and the lecture are both about the small mammal sea otter. The author of the reading believes that population of the sea otter decline due to 2 main reason which is pollution and attacks by the predators. However, the lecturer casts doubts the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that in Alaskan coast number of sea otter drastically declined due to industrial chemical pollution. It is mentioned in the article that the water samples taken shows that there are harmful chemicals like oil, thus causing harm to the health of sea otter which can contribute to their death. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that evidence suggests that pollution is not the cause of the death of sea otter, thus pointing out that there has no proof of infection in this creature. Furthermore, he argues that the drop in its population is consistent with predation.
Secondly, the author contends that ecosystem in the Alaskan coast is declining, thus, when other sea creatures are affected by marine pollution means the entire community will be affected. The article notes that some species like Orca likes to much larger prey, such as whales. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that Orca has to change its diet in order to survive. He elaborates on this by mentioning that there are declining in marine animals, so, Orca did not prey on whales but rather preyed on sea lions instead.
Finally, the author states that pollution hypothesis explains the uneven pattern of the decline in population of otter. The article establishes that in some areas there are drop in the population whereas others remained the same. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that Orca's prediction rather than pollution is the cause of decline in population in sea otter. He puts forth the idea that Orca can be easily located on the shallow rocky portion of Alaskan Coast and there is no evidence in Sea lion decline.
