According to the given set of the reading passage, it is the author's conviction that based on the fossil relics from a specific dinosaur named Sinosauropterys, they cannot be supposed as feathered dinosaurs owing to several highlighted reasons. On the contrary, the lecturer casts doubt on this justification and repudiates each of the author's specific point by providing several counter-arguments points that are as follows:
First of all, the reading holds the view that the fine lines cannot declare the functional structures of the Sinosauropterys. However, the lecturer finds this reason unconvincing and asserts that fine lines observed in the fossils of other animals in the same site beautifully support this idea as well. With this in mind, it was found that functional skin structures of other animals have been preserved very well without any decomposition.
Secondly, although the author posits that the lines, enclosed the skeleton of the Sinosauropterys, are very similar to be fossilized relics of frills, the lecturer refutes this reason too by explaining that there is an important difference between the chemical components of frills and feathers. In other words, the feathers contain a huge amount of a particular protein which is absent in frills. As a result, the existence of this chemical indicates that the lines observed in the skeletons are remains of feathers.
As the last point to emphasize the reading claim, the author points out that since the main function of the feathers is to assist the animal to fly or regulate the temperature of the body, the remains lines have found in their tails and along the backbones. Yet again, the lecturer states on the opposite side and contradicts that sometimes, the feathers have another function. For instance, some birds display their colorful feathers in order to attract the mate. As a result, the orange and white colors, found on the structures of the Sinosauropterys, strongly support this idea that the Sinosauropterys might have used these feathers to display them.
