TPO 31 - Integrated Writing Task
A fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx, preserved in volcanic ash, was discovered in Liaoning, China, in 1996. Interestingly, the fossil included a pattern of fine lines surrounding the skeletal bones. Some paleontologists interpret the lines as evidence that Sinosauropteryx had feathers. However, critics have opposed the idea that Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur, citing several reasons. First, the critics points out that the fine lines may not even represent functional structures of a living dinosaur, but rather str

The article states that the evidences in this fossil do not approve that the Sinosauropteryx had feathers and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor says that there are very strong reason for this claim and refutes the author's reasons.

First, the article argues that these lines in the fossil may not represent functional structures of a living dinosaur. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this point by explaining that we see some other dinosaur fossil in this site which have been preserved and their structure show that these line are related to functional feathers.

Second, the article concedes that, if this remained lines are related to dinoaures, we could not certainly say that what part of the animal's anatomy the structure were. The professor avers that the chemical ananlysis of the ashes have showed the presence of beta-caroton, a special protein in the feather structure which is not in the animal's fin structure.

Third, the article brings another reason to prove that this structure can not be a sign of dinosaur's feather. It contemplates that feathers are applied for flying or temperature regulation for animal. Based on this, this lines should not be located at the backbone or tail of dinosaur's fossils. On the other hand, the professor mentions another application of feathers for animal. He explains that pickauck uses its feather to attract male not for flying or cooling. He accounts this usage of feathers for dinosaur and concludes that this fossil shows that this dinosaur has feathers.
