tpo 32

The reading claims that the pattern of lines on the Sinosauropetryx (Sinx) is not an evidence that the animal had feathers. However, the lecturer finds all the idea dubious and presents evidences to refute them all.

The author argues that possibly the lines in the skeleton may have occurred/been made/shaped after the death of the animal. The animal's skin may have been decomposed into fibers and formed the lines on the skeleton while being buried in the volcanic ash. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that the lines are not the results of a decomposition. The other skeletons excavated from the same site, indicates that structures have been well preserved in the volcanic ash. So due to the samples of the same site it is a possible supposition that the Sinx skeleton has been conserved well and has not been decomposed.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that the lines may belong to another part of the Sinx. For instance, they might have been the remains of the animal's frills. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that there is a chemical discrepancy between the residue of a feather and a frill. Feathers contain a specific type of protein called beta-keratin and the chemical analysis of the skeleton illustrated that the remains of Sinx do contain the so-called protein, and this analysis rejects the frill theory.

Finally, the reading asserts that the main function of feathers is to make the animal capable of flying or compensating their internal body temperature but the location of Sinx's feathers, which is in the animal's back bone and tail, made the function of the feathers pointless and the presence of the feathers were irrelevant. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that there are other functions for feathers rather than thermoregulation or flight. One other function of the feathers in animals is display function; for instance, the bird peacock has long and colorful feathers to attract the mate. Recent analysis/analyses proved the same function for Sinx's feathers, mainly because Sinx’s feathers was colorful including orange for example and the usage may have been just for displaying.
