The article and the lecture are both about the odd sounds called “quakers” received by sailors on the Russian submarines from the 1960s to the 1980s. The author provided three seemingly plausible sources of the sounds, but the speaker casts doubts on them with solid reasons discussed below.
As a start, the writer states that quakers might be the sound of orca whales during a courtship ritual; however, the speaker clearly points out the flaw in this theory. She explains that orca whales lived in the upper surface of the ocean, and that the submarines dived deep under the sea. Thus, the submarines could not receive the sound of orca whales.
Second, the author asserts that giant squid might emit the sounds when reaching the submarines out of curiosity, but the lecturer refutes the argument with powerful contradiction. She provides the fact that the quakers only happened from the 1960s to the 1980s, but the giant squids have been there until now. Therefore, the giant squid might be able to emit the sound, but it is unreasonable that the sound did not happen anymore after the 1980s.
Last but not least, the writer thinks the sound might be emitted by other submarines unintentionally. Nonetheless, the lecturer suggests that the quakers changed directions quickly, but the submarines could not turn that fast. As a result, the sounds were not likely to be omitted by other submarines.
