The reading and the lecture are both about the quacker sound. It is the sound occasionally hear in the ocean. The author of the reading has present three theories which could produce sound. However, the lecture casts doubt on the argument made in the article. He is of the opinion that the none of the theory is convincing.
First of all, the author of the reading suggests that the strange sound were the calls of male and female orca whales. He believes that the orca whales are the inhabitant of the area and it would have been produced the sound. This point is challenged by the lecture. He suggests that the orca whale lives in the surface water and sound appears in the deep submarine area. Therefore, it is unlikely that orca whales have produced the sound.
Second, the author suggests that the sound is produced by the giant squid. He adds on this that the giant squid is the intelligent animal. It could be possible that they have the skills to emit the sound while approached the submarine out of curiosity. The lecture refutes this idea. He suggests that the sounds were disappeared for the 20 years of the period and then appeared back. If it had produced by the Giant squid, It would not have disappeared because the giant squids were living continuously.
Third, the author states that the sound was produced by the military technology used by the foreign submarines. However, the lecture, on the other hand, suggests that the submarine could make the sound of the engine. However, there was no report of the presence of the engine sound with the odd sound. Therefore, the idea of the sound produced by the foreign submarines is not true.
