The reading and the lecture are both about the yellow cedar. It is the type of the tree commonly found in North America. The article has provided three hypotheses which explain why the tree is decline. The lecture casts doubt on the argument made in the article. He thinks that the reasons are not adequate.
First, the author mentions that the yellow cedar trees are declining due to the insect. He believes that the cedar bark beetle insect attack the cedar trees and killing the trees. The lecture refutes this idea. He suggests that the cedar trees are much resistance to the insect then other trees. He explains that the cedar trees are cover with the powerful chemical that protects the tree from the beetle insect.
Second, the author suggests that the brown bears are the cause of the reduction of the cedar trees. He believes that the bears feed themselves on the tree and feeding habit may weaken trees. This point is challenged by the lecture. He suggests that the cedar trees are declining in the area where the bears do not exists and the area where the bears exist. Therefore, the theory of declining the trees by the bears could not be explained.
Third, the author states that the trees are declining due to the change of climate. He adds on this that development of the root of the trees in the winter season instead of in the spring could damage the root system of the tree. However, the lecture, on the other hand, suggests that the most of the cedar trees are dying in the warm climate and not in the cold climate. It suggests that the trees are more likely to survive in the cold climate. Therefore, the theory of the climate is not adequate.
