The article states that the P. ramorum is the harmful fungus which causes damage to the forests of the United States and provides three methods to control the fungus. However, the professor explains that the measures mention in the reading passage is ineffective and refutes each of the author's methods.

First, the reading claims that stopping the spore from spreading is the practical method. The professor refutes this point by saying that the washing shoes and installing new bike scrubbers on bicycle trails will not make a significant impact on protecting the spread of the spores. He states that water stream can pick up excessive spores by rainwater which is difficult to control by the measures like washing shoes.

Second, the article posits that the fungicidal chemicals could reduce the likelihood that the oaks will be infected. However, the professor says that the fungicidal chemicals require injecting directly in the tree trunk and its effect remain short-term, so it requires spreading the chemicals at every few months and in whole forests. Hence, This is not the practical way to protect the forest.

Finally, the reading passage suggests that cutting and burning diseased oaks tree can protect the surrounding healthy plants. The professor opposes this point by explaining that the surrounding vegetation can get easily destroyed by the process of cutting and burning of the diseased tree. Moreover, some of the species of the trees are rare that could easily get damaged by the burning of the diseased tree.
