The reading and the lecture are both about a cloud seeding. In this cloud seeding process, the chemical silver iodide is sprayed on the clouds from an airplane. It controls the hail which is problematic for the farm. The author is in favor of the cloud seeding process. He provides with the evidence which suggests cloud seeding is effective in protecting crops from hail. The lecture casts doubt on the argument made in the lecture. He thinks the Cloud seeding is not an effective measure.
First of all, according to laboratory experiment in the reading article, when the silver iodide is added to the cold water vapor, light snow is form instead of the hail pellets. The lecture opposed this idea.He suggests that the silver iodide precipitate not only hail but also the snow and rain. It is the bad thing because seeding the area may reduce the availability of water. The crop may get damaged due to the lack of water.
Second, evidence from Asia, as suggests in the article states that the cloud seeding has been successfully used to control precipitation in urban areas. It should also be effective on the farm in the United States. This point is challenged by the lecture. He suggests that the pollution of the urban area took part in controlling the precipitation. However, it is this favorable condition for the cloud is not possible on the farms of the United States. Hence, cloud seeding may not be effective on the farm of the United States.
Third, the author od the reading has provided the evidence of the local study. the study found that the cloud seeding has reduced the hail damage. However, the lecture, on the other hand, suggests that the cloud seeding has reduced the hail not just in an area where the silver iodide sprayed but also in the many areas. Therefore, It is the possibility of the natural variations in the local weather and cloud seeding has nothing to do with it. Hence, the local study is not reliable to prove the effectiveness of the cloud seeding.
