In this set of materials, the reading passage states that some sailors in Russian submarines hear a strange sound was named quackers for 2 decades, and the reading brings several reasons for the source of quackers. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).
First and foremost, the reading indicates that ocra whales make the sound as the same as quackers when they want to attract female, so this sound would belong to ocra whales; in contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that ocra whales live near the surface, but submarines are in the depths. Thus, it is highly unlikely that the sound could be heard from this far distance, and she also adds that orcas could be detected by submarines' sonar.
Furthermore, the reading argues that giant squids are living in the deep ocean, and they are intelligent animals, so they may able to emit this sound; conversely, what the professor believes is different. She points out that Russian submarines hear quackers for 2 decades(19960 until 1980). But, giant squids live in the ocean for several years after 1980. Therefore, if it was their sounds, it must be heard before that period or these days too, but there is not any report of quackers recently.
Finally, according to the reading, quackers might produce with some military technology from other countries that were secretly patrolling the area. However, the professor believes that quicker move around and change direction quickly. But, at that time, countries did not have the technology for producing submarines that move fast. Also, they could not make some submarines that became silent.
