TPO 34

In this set of materials, the reading passage discusses that some potential reason for the extinction of Steller's sea cows in the Bering Island. While, the professor in the listening casts doubts on what is presented in the text and believes that actually, we do not know that main reason for the extinction of sea cows in this region and the reasons that mentioned in the text it is not convincing.

First of all, in the text, it is clearly mentioned that the sea cows extinct because of overhunting by native Siberian people. However, the professor claims that these animals had a very large body and had weight around ten tons. as well as, the population of native people in this region at this time was very small. Therefore they could not be hunting a large number of the sea comes with their primary tools that it can lead to the extinction of sea cows.

In addition, the professor disagrees with this idea that change in the marine environment in this area is the cause of extinction. He says that if this ecological changes happened at this time it should be affected other sea animals, not just sea cows.

Finally, in the text, it is stated that the sea cows extinct after arrived of European in this region. the professor subscribes that at the time of European arrived the population of sea cows was already very small. THus the actual reason to decrease in the number of sea cows have happened long before Europeans arrived.
