TPO 34

The lecturer and the reading discuss the extinction of the massive marine mammal that lived in Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. Although the passage claims that there theories about the main cause of the sea cows' extinction, the speaker refutes this idea through several reasons which I will describe in this reporter.

First and foremost, the passage points out that overhunting the sea cow by native people was the main reason for extinction. The lecturer, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that a sea cow was a massive mammal, and it roughly had 10 tone weight and 9 meters long. Also, the population of Sibrian village not many; hence, a couple of sea cow was enough for Siberia village. Therefore, the hunting theory is not correct for declining the sea cow.

Furthermore, unlike the passage which states that the ecosystem of the Bering Island was destroyed, and the main food source for the sea cows disappeared. The professor argues that if the food source of the see was a decline, the population of other marine animals must be declined like whales. But there is not any evidence to show that the whale population had decreased. Thus, this hypothesis could not be true.

Finally, although the reading passage says that European traders have been hunting the sea cows for fur traders, and it causes declining the sea cows population, the speakers disagree by mentioning that the size of sea cows was declining before European arrived. Therefore, something was causing a massive decline in the sea cows' population long before the time European arrived there, so they were not the main reason for the sea cows' extinction.
