The reading gives some hypotheses that lead to sea cows in the Berian Island to extinct. However, the lecture refutes all the hypotheses provided in the reading passage.
First, the professor mentions that the sea cows were massive creature and big in size. Since the native Siberian were small population at that time, a couple of sea cows could feed the native Siberian for a month. Therefore, native Siberian are in not in need for overhunting sea cows for food. That was a point where the lecture disagree with the point illustrated in the reading passage.
Second, contrary to belief in the reading that the ecosystem disturbances, accompanied by the decline of sea cows main source of food the kelp, is the main reason for the sea cows extinct, the lecture refutes the hypothesis by saying that ecosystem disturbance should effect other sea mammals like whales. However, there is no evidence that other sea mammals were effected at that period. That was another point where the lecture refutes what mentions in the reading material
Finally, The author mentions that European fur traders are responsible for sea cows extinction as three are recored that indicates that the fur trader cought the last sea cow in 1968.In contrast, the professor emphasizes that that the europpean fur traders were not responsible for sea cows extinction. Evidence indicates that sea cows population were at high level in the past and started to decline before the European traders arrive to Bering Island. Therefore, there must be anther factor that lead to their decline rather than the fur traders.
Overall, it seems that the lecture showed that there are discrepancies in the points illustrated in the reading passage.
