TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see
The reading passage states that there are a number of theories why Steller's sea cows, which were the animals that lived in the waters around Bering island of Siberia, have become extinct. However, the professor explains that we do not know what the causes of their extinction exactly are and refutes each one of the author's theories.
First, that the sea cows may have been overhunted by a native Siberian group due to the supplying food resources, as the reading claims, is rejected by the professor. He contends that the sea cows were massive in their weight. Some of them were extremely enormous. At that period, the population of the Siberian people was not so large. It may be true that these people hunted these animals for their food supply, but the amount of this hunting was not excessive at that point of time.
Second, the reading article argues that the sea cows get extinct because of some ecological changes. In contrast, the professor posits that this claim is not likely to be true because if the loss of Kelp, which was the sea cows' main source of food, was a result of the ecological changes, then other plants would have also been affected by this change. However, nothing is reported to confirm this change at that time.
Third, the reading passage makes a point that the leading cause of the sea cows' extinction was European fur traders, who hunted these animals. On the contrary, the lecturer casts doubts on this point by saying that it might be because of the traders' hunting, but it should be noted that these animals' decrease in population had been started from a long time -hundred years- ago, before the time that traders arrived in that area. In fact, sea cows' population was already declining, prior to the trader's arrival. So, in this regard, the major factor of these animals' extinction would be whatever brought up the change in their population, not the traders' arrival.
