TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

The reading claims that a huge marine mammal which lived in the water around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia suddenly became extinct in 1768. The main reasons for the extinction are vague. The author provides three theories about the cause of the extinction. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.

The author argues that groups of native Siberian people may have over haunted sea cow. They were an awesome source of food in harsh environment after hundreds of years of too much hunting the numbers of sea cow suddenly extinct. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that sea cows creatures are really massive, which were normally 9-meter long and 10-tons, small part of sea cows are enough for month food supply, and the population of native Siberian people was not large. So, they didn’t need to over hunt. This assumes is irreparable.

Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that extinct sea cows caused by ecosystem disturbances. Sea cows depend on Kelp, but before 1768, Kelp population respond to ecological decreased. It may have caused of extincted. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that if ecosystem disturbances realy happened before1768, it wouldn’t just effected on Kelp but also other part of ecosystems, like decline in other marine animals such whales. How ever, there wasn’t any report of a decrease of the number of whales at that time. So, food shortage could not be caused of sea cows extinction.

Finally, the reading asserts that European fur trade was the main cause of extinction. Possessed weapons made an opportunity to quickly kill a large number of animals. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that most seem extinction occurred before European arrived to the island. So, these people could not be a main cause of the extinction of sea cow.
