Reading and lecture are both about Seller's sea cows, which became extinct in 1768. On the one hand, the writer presents three theories that might have caused their tragic extinction. On the other hand, the speaker casts doubts on the claims made by the writer, arguing that his theories are inaccurate when compared to reality.
First, sea cows were large animals, weighting ten tons and measuring around nine meters, and a couple of them would have enough to feed a village for a few months. The author states that excessive hunting for providing food supply, caused their extinction. However, the speaker refutes this, saying that the human population in that area was small, thereby inhabitants could not have hunted so many see cows. Thus, this argument contradicts the author's point of view.
Second, decline in source of food affects the entire ecosystem, and other animals such as whales should have suffered from this. Whereas, no report states that there was a declining in the number of various fishes or whales. So, this is a standpoint that directly gainsays the passage.
Third, it is true that sea cows disappeared soon after the Europeans came to the island. Nevertheless, is not correct to make them responsible for this situation, as the author implies. According to recorded information, sea cows' population started to decrease long before Europeans hunted them for trading fur. Therefore, whatever caused their death, it has nothing to do with intensive hunting. In conclusion, the author and the lecturer seem to be in disagreement regarding this topic.
