TPO-34 - Integrated Writing Task A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first Europeans to see

The reading and the lecture are both about the marine mammals Steller's sea cow, which once lived in the coast of Siberia. The article states that these animals became extinct in the year 1768 and provides three reasons for support. However, the lecturer refutes by saying none of the claims are convincing.

First, the article conveys that sea cows may have been extinct because of overhunting by humans. On the other hand, the professor refutes this point by saying that sea cows are massive creatures with 9mts long and 10 tons of weight. Furthermore, the population in Siberia is less than the population of the sea cow. Hence there is no possibility of extinction of sea cows by humans.

Second, the text explains that sea cows may have disappeared because of the ecological disturbances of the major food plant kelp. Nevertheless, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that if, the major food source kelp was disrupted then other animals like whales could also be affected but the population of whales is not degraded.

Third, the article posits that because of the European fur traders the population of sea cows may be diminished. However, the professor says that the sea cow population is less when the traders arrived the European. Consequently, there is no chance of extinction of sea cows by traders.
