The reading passage states threes theories may help to explain the extinction of Steller's sea cow, whereas the professor points out that these explanation are not reasonable.
Firstly, the author insists that sea cow was a good source of food for Siberian, and the overhunting of Siberian cause the extinction of sea cow. The professor, however, argues that sea cow was a massive creature and one of sea cow could feed the whole Siberian tribe for a month, meanwhile the population of Siberian was not so large that can cause the extinction of sea cow.
Secondly, the reading says that a ecosystem disturbance that lead to the decline of kelp population which is the main source of food of sea cow is responsible for the extinction. In contrast, the speaker reckons that if there was such a event, then other animals living in that time would also be influenced such as, whales. Nonetheless, there are no reports that whale's population had decreased. In this way, the ecosystem should be in a good condition.
Lastly, reading states that European fur traders who possessed weapons may account for the extinction of sea cow. On the contrary, the speaker deems that European fur traders are not the main reason why sea cow became extinct. There are evidences that the numbers of sea cow already had reduced before the European arrived, and when the European arrived, sea cow only had a small population. So it is other things that responsible for their extinction.
