The reading and the listening are both about the reason why sea cow demiced in 1768. The passage believes three reasons which caused the extinction. However, the professor argues the three causes by mentioning the following refutations.
To begin with, the author of the essay points out that sea cow might be overhunted by native Siberian people. Nonetheless, the lecturer challenges the point by mentioning that the quantity of sea cows were massive and their height were about 9 meters. That is to say, they were enormous compared to human beings. As a result, one sea cow could feed Siberian people for few months and Siberian people did not need to hunt a lot of sea cow for food.
Second, the reading contends that ecosystems disturbances might cause a decline in sea cow's main source of food, kelp. Nevertheless, the professor states that if the disturbances had been severe before 1768, other species such as whales might be affected, not just for kelp. However, based on the research, there were not other fish that declined exceedly at that time. Therefor, disturbances was not the main cause.
Third, the article believes that European fur trader killed a large number of sea cows after 1741 because they had weapons. Once again, the professor disagrees with the idea, and she maintains that sea cow had already dramatically decreased before 1700, the time long before European people came to Bering Island. Consequently, European people were not the main reason for the demise.
In a nutshell, the professor successfully casts doubt on all of the claims presented in the article.
