The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about cloud seeding which is a method for reducing hail. The reading passage claims that this procedure is impressive to protect crops from hail. The lecturer, on the other hand, not only categorically casts doubt on every single point raised by the author of the passage through citing three counter-arguments but also believes that none of the mentioned explanations is convincing and clear enough.
To begin with, the author establishes that due to the conducted experiments in the Laboratory, the obtained results showed that by adding silver iodide to cold water vapor, light snow forming was observed rather than hail pallets. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this idea, stating that it is true that this phenomenon creates light snow instead of hail; however, if that material is added to any precipitation such as snow and rain, it prevents all of them from forming rain in the cloud. This really increases the risk of drought and crops will be damaged as a result of the lack of water.
Furthermore, the reading passage brings up this notion that the cloud seeding method was exerted to control precipitation in urban areas of several countries in Asia regions and the obtained results were successful. Consequently, this method can be successfully used in the United States as well. Conversely, the lecturer specifies that those results may not be repeated in the United States owing to the fact that the high-level of air pollution is different in each city. The air pollution creates a favorable condition for cloud seeding, therefore, the results of polluted and unpolluted cities are not identical.
Eventually, the reading goes on to mention that due to the obtained results from local investigations, the hail damage was reduced in a region that exerted the cloud seeding method in comparison to previous years. Notwithstanding, this reduced hail damage was also observed in other areas which means that this has really happened due to natural variations not for using the cloud seeding procedure.
