The main idea of the both the passage and the lecture is about possibility of solving the threatening decrease in endangered turtles numbers by shrimpers by an innovative method named TED. Having this in mind, the passage mentions that the TED method efficiency has been criticized for some reasons. The lecturer, on contrary, categorically refutes the notion, citing that the reasons are not convincing at all. She provides three explanations addressing each reason mentioned in the passage.
First, both the text and the talk discuss the idea of turtles get trapped rarely by shrimpers. In this line of thought, the author claims that the number of the turtles trapped are very low for every boat. The speaker, on the other hand, mentions that it is true that for some boats the number is low but there are thousands of boats in south coast of the USA that capture some turtles every day. Consequently, the number of trapped turtles rise to thousands collectively because we need to consider the whole industry and not some individuals. Therefore, according to the lecturer, using TED method is very efficient to rescue trapped turtles.
Second, both the passage and the lecturer discuss the idea of shortening time limit of shrimp boats for keeping their net underwater. In this vein, the text mentions that is a great alternative for TED method. However, the lecturer opposes this idea, mentioning that government could not monitor all boats and if they are obeying the time limit or no. Under such a circumstance monitoring the usage of TED method bu shrimpers is much easier for government.
Third, both the reading and the listening materials put forth the idea of efficiency of TED for larger species of endangered sea turtles. While the author claim that it is not an efficient way and larger ones cannot escape through the net, the lecturer refutes this notion. She further explains that the TED net design is adaptable for the larger species and design can easily be modified. Therefore, it will not longer be a problem.
