Based on given materials, the article as well as lecture discusses a technology which is named turtle excluder device (TED) could helps endangered sea turtle species to escape from nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. The author states that this method could not be effective cause three reasons. That being said, the lecturer provides several responses to repudiate this claim.
Initially, the author says that sea turtles get trapped very rarely and based on statistics, it is estimated that on average, one shrimp boat accidentally catches about one turtle every month. However, the lecturer explains that it is true fact ,but population of turtles are very small. Furthermore, there are several boats prey in the specific zone of sea. Consequently, more than 1000 turtle are caught every year and it is huge. On the other, losing few shrimps in the sea do not influence the shrimp industry.
Second, the writer proclaims that there are some alternative methods instead of TED. Yet again, the speaker underscores other alternatives. The writer purpose to shorten the time limit that shrimp boats are allowed to keep their nets underwater. But, the speaker thinks it is just a theory since patrol boards cannot monitor all the time limit of the boats. Based on this response, it is useless and impractical theory.
The final point of contention between the reading and listening passages is effectiveness of TED for larger species of endangered sea turtles. The author thinks it could not help larger species to escape from the nets even if the nets are equipped with TEDs. On the other hand, the speaker explains that by some modifying on the original TED, it is no longer be a problem. Furthermore, She continues that based on the size of turtle in specific zone, they could change TEDs and shake them out to functional matters.
