Both the reading passage and lecture discuss about turtle excluder device (TED), which can be used to save endangered sea turtle species from being caught by shrmp fishing boats. The author presents some criticism regarding usage of this device to protect turtles. However, the professor believes that this device can be used effectively and she challenges those criticisms by providing several counter arguments.
First of all, the author claims that, it is very rare event for a ship that catches a turtle and it would not be cost effective for shrimp catchers to incorporate TED into the nets, as many shrimp might be escaped while trying to save one turtle. By contrast, the lecturer states that there are lots of shrimp fishing boats which catches a large number of turtle every year. Therefore, if someone considers whole picture as a whole, he would definitely advocate usage of TED.
Secondly, the author presents another approach which states that, time limit should be applied and nets should be pulled up to surface after that certain time, which allows turtles to breath in air and to be released from the nets. However, the professor points out the fact that, it would be very difficult for law enforcing forces to apply that time limit to all of the boats.
Lastly, according to the passage, some larger species of turtles can not be saved using TED as the escape passage is not large enough in standard TEDs. The lecturer finds this issue dubious and asserts that it is possible to prepare TED with larger passage without effecting other features.
