TPO 42

The reading claims that because birds do not distinguish building glasses, each year a large number of them are harmed by hitting the glasses. So to avoid this devastating problem, the reading proposes three solutions. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and refutes them all.

First, the reading passage claims that by using one-way glass, because birds can not see inside it, they do not fly through it. Conversely, the professor dismisses the issue due to the fact that one-way glasses in fact act like mirrors. for instance, they reflect the sky and trees, which flyers can not distinguish the reflection between real objects and them, so they fly through them too.

furthermore, the author argues that by using colorful designs like colorful lines on the glass, birds could see them and avoid flying through them. In the contrast, the speaker underlines the fact that these kinds of patterns on the window have an opening which birds try to fly through it, so the opening must be small enough to avoid this, which has a negative impact on the people who live there because the inside of the building would be too dark.

Finally, the reading asserts that by using magnetic fields, birds could divert their path to free space, so they do not hit the glasses. on the contrary, the lecturer brings up the idea that although birds use their magnetic compass for long distances, however, for flying short distances like cities, they use their eyes and the light. So this would not have positive effects on them either.
